Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

In alignment with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines and the authorship criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), artificial intelligence tools, including but not limited to chatbots such as ChatGPT, cannot be credited as authors on any submission to the Journal of Global Smallholder Studies (JGSS). Authorship requires accountability and responsibility for the intellectual content of the work, which AI tools cannot fulfil.

Authors who utilise AI tools at any stage of their research or manuscript preparation are required to disclose such usage clearly and comprehensively. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Drafting or editing manuscript content
  • Generating images, figures, or graphical elements
  • Assisting with data collection or analysis

Disclosures must be made in:

  • The cover letter accompanying the manuscript submission
  • The Methods or Acknowledgements sections of the manuscript

Authors are fully accountable for all content in their submissions, including portions generated or assisted by AI tools. Any breaches of publication ethics arising from AI-assisted content—such as plagiarism, inaccuracies, or ethical violations—will be the sole responsibility of the authors.

The JGSS editorial team reserves the right to evaluate the appropriateness of AI tool usage in all submitted manuscripts. The decision to accept or reject a submission based on AI tool use is made at the editors' discretion, guided by ethical standards and the journal’s goals of scientific integrity and transparency.

This policy ensures that the use of AI in scholarly work adheres to ethical norms while maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of the journal’s published content.
